History


1910

  • Friedrich Löffler established the worldwide first virological research institution on the Island of Riems

1919

  • After the end of the war, the veterinarian Otto Waldmann was entrusted with the task of continung Friedrich Löffler’s research work on the Island of Riems. Activities were still focused on foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and on the production of an FMD- hyperimmune serum.

1920

  • Conversion of the Riems facility into a modern research institute of the “Landwirtschaftsministerium” (Ministry of Agriculture).

1938

  • Waldmann and Köbe produced an FMD-vaccine which came to use during the FMD epidemic of the years 1937 – 1938.

1943

  • The "Staatlichen Forschungsanstalten Insel Riems" (Public Research Institutions Island of Riems) came into the property of the Geman state and from this moment on were named "Reichsforschungsanstalt Insel Riems" (Imperial Research Institution Island of Riems).

1945

  • Part of the equipment and furniture was removed as reparations and was lost.

1948

  • Heinz Röhrer was appointed head of the "Forschungsanstalt für Tierseuchen Insel Riems" (Research Institute for Animal Diseases, Island of Riems) which was then subordinated to the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the fthen GDR.
  • In addition to research on foot-and-mouth disease, the research programme of the institute was extended to other viral diseases of farm animals.

 1950

  • Comprehensive research work yielded the RIEMSER foot-and-mouth disease vaccine concentrate, which enabled the former 30 ml cattle dose to be reduced to 5 ml.

1951

  • Foot-and-mouth disease vaccine concentrate established the basis for the immunization of all cattle older than two years against foot-and-mouth disease.
  • Numerous European countries followed this example.

1952

  • At the occasion of Friedrich Loeffler's 100th birthday in 1952 and after years of reconstruction and modernisation the institute was named after its founder Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut. Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut

1956

  • Continuation of the production of crystal violet vaccine against swine fever
  • Within the next few years, the new building in Riemserort will accommodate the development and manufacture of vaccines and diagnostic products for the treatment of animal diseases caused by viruses (the building-complex is today part of RIEMSER Arzneimittel AG and is situated opposite the island).
  • Production of crystal violet vaccines against swine fever was continued.

1970 - 1985

  • Intensive applied research activities advanced the production of vaccines considerably.
  • Numerous new vaccines and diagnostics were introduced onto the market. They include for instance such still well known preparations as RIEMSER® Schweinepestvakzine, RIEMSER® IBR/IPV-Vakzine, RIEMSER® Rinderleukose-Testbesteck.

1990

  • The production department of the Friedrich-Löffler Research Institute for Animal Diseases, Island of Riems, was affiliated to RIEMSER Tierarzneimittel GmbH.

1992

  • RIEMSER Tierarzneimittel GmbH was privatised by the Braun family. The company realised a turnover of 1.1 million Euro and had 30 employees.

1995

  • Completion of the new GMP-production hall for the manufacturing of bio-technological products in Riems.

1996

  • Commissioning of a new logistic centre with eight warehouses to ensure the further business expansion of the Riems company.

1997

  • Acquisition of Floracell Kosmetik, Rheinland-Palatinate.
  • Change of name to RIEMSER Arzneimittel GmbH.

1998

  • Noteworthy company growth by purchase of market authorisations from international pharmaceutical companies such as Wyeth, Solvy, Johnson & Johnson, Knoll, Akzo, GlaxoSmithKline.
  • The company acquired patents and pharmaceutical dossiers and presented its own promising research results.

1999

  • The veterinary division extented its range of products with pharmaceutics and supplementary feeds.

2000

  • Takeover of the Leipziger Arzneimittelwerkes (LAW)
  • RIEMSER Arzneimittel GmbH got the right to acquire 50 % of the Bioveta a.s. shares. Bioveta a.s., which owns shares in Sevapharma a.s. Prague, and diverse subsidiaries in Eastern-Europe.

2001

  • Transformation into a joint stock company.
  • New building and reconstructural activities were completed and temporarily ceased at Riems.
  • Unipharma Spolka in Warsaw was set up in co-operation with the Czech Bioveta a.s.
  • Transfer of new agents which are to be prepared for new applications by clinical studies.
  • Acquisition of patent rights in CHP (tumour treatment)
  • Development of a vaccine against dermatophytosis together with the Czech Bioveta a.s.
  • Development of immune stimulation by human leucocytes in co-operation with the Sevapharma a.s., Prague
  • Until the end of 2001, more than 50 million Euros were spent for the further expansion of the company.
  • The former Minister of Economic Affairs in the Federal State Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Mr Otto Ebnet presented RIEMSER Arzneimittel AG public sponsorship grants of about 1.5 million Euro for cancer research. Until today, the amount has been one of the highest even granted for bio-technological research in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
  • The 30 million Euro turnover threshold was exceeded.

2002

  • Takeover of the Pharma Dessau GmbH together with the research project Hylase.
  • Further intensification of hylase- research
  • Acquisition of 60 % of the DeGAB Pharma GmbH & Co. KG, in Münster, Westphalia
  • Development of sales and distribution for oncological preparations
  • Completion of preclinical CHP-studies, begin of clinical trials (I and II).
  • 1 July 2002, overtaking of Bioglan Pharma GmbH, Gießen

2003

  • Takeover of business divisions (needle free injection systems and measurement engineering) of the insolvent Rösch AG in Berlin

  • Acquisition of international rights for cardiavascular preparations such as Ismo, Lanitop, Lanicor, Spiroctan, Sali-Spiroctan and Aldactone
  • Takeover of the operational business including all staff members of the Bionic Solution Management GmbH, Greifswald

  • Participation of the General Electric Equity (GE)
  • Takeover of the entire dental business of Curasan in Kleinostheim and its American subsidiary - the Riemser Inc. - Raleigh, North Carolina
  • The Riemser AG acquires all shares of the prestigious Rentschler Pharma GmbH in Laupheim near Ulm, and thus a further production site
  • Dr. Gordon Guth is the new Chief Finance

2009

  • Norbert Braun, the CEO of Riemser Arzneimittel AG as of 1 June, the company management to Dr. Michael Mehler passed. The biochemist, moved from the listed company Actelion AG in Switzerland to Riemser Arzneimittel AG and has since 1 January in the company as director of research / development and marketing / sales.After the change of Norbert Braun in the Supervisory Board, Dr. Michael Mehler is the new CEO.
